2D Game Design

Dates: Tuesdays, starting on April 2 and ending May 21 (NO class April 16)

2D Game Design introduces the fundamentals and concepts of game design within a real game engine many indie development teams currently use. Students learn to design and build their own game from the ground up, while learning 2D game art and programming logic with the engine’s integrated art software and easy-to-use events system, fit for beginners through advanced learners alike. Our instructors help students develop games individually, so students have the freedom to create at their pace while focusing on their creative interests. The final product is their own game that can be played on any computer, and the know how to continue their game development at home.

Acting for Young People

Students learn to use their own unique qualities to act, using theater games, improvisation, storytelling, and text. Through individual and group activities, young actors build confidence, and each will make a significant contribution to our final presentation, held on the last class day. This program has been specially adapted for before/after school programs from AFYP’s expanded curriculum of classes and Summer Acting Camps and is ideal for new and returning students with any level of experience.

Youth Basketball for All Levels of Players. Your child will:

All grades and skill levels welcome! Chess Club is taught by experienced Silver Knights instructors using a curriculum developed by National Masters. Each weekly session is a mix of learning and play. Playing chess is a great way to develop a child’s critical thinking skills, sportsmanship, and patience —all while having fun!

The season of Spring gives our artists new inspiration and lessons like the Bee Graphic and historic Model T. Every child will draw their lesson in detail and learn new techniques like how to add a little whimsy to our version of Aladdin’s Lamp and some adorable Baby Dragons.

Huddle Up and get ready for Flag Football to become an instant classic. Kids are lining up to score touchdowns and get a taste of the most popular game in the country! Players will get a chance to be running backs, wide receivers, defensive ends, and corner backs. Learn to pass, catch, run routes and punt like the pros! We'll practice these skills while playing Button Hook, Down & Out, Pitch & Run and First & Ten. Scrimmages and Red Zone Challenges will test your skills, promote teamwork and encourage sportsmanship. Come play the fastest game on two feet! Our Coaches will teach you the skills you need to play Lacrosse; cradling, passing and catching, scooping, shooting and defense. We'll even provide the sticks for this introduction to the game and exposure to the basics of Lacrosse! Capture the Lax Ball, Ground Ballhogger and Dodger are some of our favorite games to play. This perfect mix of scrimmaging and stations allows players to interact with Coaches and teammates in a fun and exciting way. Come catch the fever that is Lacrosse, one of the fastest growing sports today!

Minecraft Modding teaches students important problem-solving and design skills by making changes to the popular multiplayer game itself. Programming fundamentals are reinforced by designing and implementing large-scale Minecraft modifications. Our instructors offer individualized attention and mentorship throughout our course, so students will learn at their pace following their personal learning style and interests. Students end their time with us with their mods, which they may add to their personal Minecraft games.

Save the world with LEGO® Super Heroes! Build the hideouts and vehicles of your favorite caped crusaders and learn what makes them not only Super Heroes, but Super Hero Engineers! An experienced Play-Well instructor guides young heroes as they design, build, and save a city where ingenuity and imagination can solve any conflict.

Website Design is a course that teaches the art and design side of web development. By teaching students about user experience, use of type and color, art placement and usage, text and graphics effects, interface design and utilizing negative space, they will learn to think about aesthetics differently when creating websites. Our instructors will be with each student during their process, so they may create websites unique to who they are and what they like. By the end of the class the students will each have a beautiful and impressive website of their own.

Offered by Kids in Motion, Zumba class is a high energy, contagiously exciting dance workout specifically designed for children. Classes are designed with kid friendly music, movements, and routines. Zumba for Kids is a perfect fit for children and it creates an environment of excitement around being healthy and active! This class helps children boost metabolism and increase focus, coordination, and self-confidence. Zumba instructors are certified Zumba Kids instructors, which certify them to teach 5 to 12-year-old children. Instructors receive further training through Kids in Motion lead instructors.

NEW PTA Community Partner – Mt. Kim Martial Arts Studio

Fairview introduces our newest PTA Community Partner, Mt. Kim Martial Arts Studio. Mt. Kim offers classes, special events, and DAILY after school care. The after-school program is full time Monday through Friday. Transportation from school, afternoon snack, classes, reading/homework time, and fun are all included!

Students will engage in DEAR time (Drop Everything And Read), read-aloud time, homework time, and arts/crafts time each day before and after martial arts classes. Students will be encouraged to read every day to improve their reading skills and comprehension as well as encouraged to finish their school assignments. Students will also have snack time, board games or art crafts time under the supervision of a state certified teacher.
